Why I love Koreans: A review on a K-pop sensation and horror movies

This past week has been nothing but a K-pop, Korean horror movie marathon for my boyfriend and I.

I'm here to say it was awesome.

In case you've been living under a rock for a few weeks, I'm providing you with a music video that you have to watch. It is imperative to your survival.

This video is four minutes and thirteen seconds of pure genius. As someone who has A.D.D. qualities, I was simply amazed by the randomness of this video. From the horses, to the elevator, to man in the fantastic yellow suit.. I was and still am mesmerized

For the vast majority of us who don't speak Korean, the song is about a man who is looking for a woman who's a lady during the day, but can get down at night as well. But that really doesn't matter to me. It's just so damn catchy. It's like Party Rockin' but so much better... It's musical gold and quite the viral video. It makes me want to take that teaching English job in South Korea. These people look like they know how to have fun.

This video has to date 63.8 million views - 15 million of those views have taken place in the last three days. The video has so many parodies. There's one about Chicago, that kinda sucked in my opinion. Chicago is not that cool. I'm sorry, but it is what it is. I like Medieval Times, pizza and a cool planetarium as much as the next American, but really, Korea seems like a better location for this particular video.

Anyway, so the second part of this post is about some fun Korean horror movies I've been watching. Thanks to Netflix, I have full-length, subtitled movies at my finger tips, and this weekend my boyfriend and I decided to bunker down with some Korean horror.

This is a lovely movie called White. The premise is that a girl group called "The Pink Dolls" is trying to make it in Korea. As a last ditch effort, one of the girls suggest to remake a song she found on an old VHS inside their dancing studio. The song, however, is cursed.

While I would say this movie is much better than 75% of what American horror has to offer, I thought it was a little lacking for Koreans. I mean, it was pretty messed up. there were a few scenes that cause me to shudder. It was the plot that got me. Towards the end, I was a little confused as to who exactly was the ghost that was traumatizing the girls. It was a jumbled mess for me, probably because I'm not as used to Korean names as the natives. Everything is some syllable then a hyphen and another syllable to me. ><

But seriously, if I were to grade this on the American horror movie scale, it would easily be an eight or nine, but for the Koreans I'm going to give it this:

7/10

Dead Friend, or The Ghost depending on translation, was not as confusing as White, but did offer a good twist at the end that I never saw coming.

The premise of the movie is a college-age young woman is trying to remember her past. She somehow has acute amnesia where she can remember new events, but events past a certain part of her life are completely forgotten. Soon, this girl finds that some of her past friends are dying in horrific ways. While some people in her life tell her to forget the past, to never remember, she keeps moving forward and digs up a deadly secret.

This movie had me interested in the story. While not exactly scary, it was a good mystery. The end definitely was different. As per usual, the movie made use of water and hair to pretty much creep me out. Now I wasn't scared, just thought it was icky, for lack of a better term.

(side note)
For some reason, every Asian horror movie reminds me of the girl from The Ring. The water. The creepy crawling. The water... Apparently this is a big thing in Asian horror that will forever be tied with a US remake for me. =/

All things aside, it was a pretty good movie. Not too confusing. I enjoyed it.

Here's a solid:

7.5/10

My lovely boyfriend picked this movie out. It's called Cinderella. Basically, some girl, who has a plastic surgeon for a mother, ends up finding out that her mother has a lot of secrets. The girl's suspicions arise when  all of her friends that her mother preformed surgery on start dying in really awkward and disgusting ways.

The first half of the movie was pretty damn good. I liked the whole "I want a pretty face" creepy Korean thing this movie had going on. I like how Korean movies are more of a mystery instead of a hack and slash. There's always some ghost or curse that is an involved link to the plot. I enjoy movies that make me think.

But toward the end, the focus switched from the daughter to the mother, and I was left rather confused, once again. I really need to start understanding Korean names. Seriously.Anyway, names aside, it was a little too much in the second half. The timeline of events confused not only me, but my boyfriend. We were constantly asking each other questions, which we obviously couldn't answer.

Again, these movies are by far much better than the average haunted house, serial killer trash America has to offer, but this movie in particular left me unsatisfied and really lost.

6/10

In conclusion, I have a few short things to say.

1. I reeeeaaaallly need to learn Korean names. I couldn't tell you any of the people's names in these movies. I think in the last movie the girl's name started with an H? Yeah.. I apologize for my laziness on looking up characters' names.
2. I must acquire PSY's discography, even if I read somewhere that Gangnam Style was not like the rest of his songs.
3. Korean horror movies have sweet covers.
4. I will go clubbing as long as they play Gangnam Style at least twice.
5. Koreans are awesome. Well, at least the South.
